Marine Stewardship Council Certification

As of February 2016, we began serving Marine Stewardship Council certified seafood in all three of our dining centers. WSU was the first university in Washington to make this commitment and, at the time of certification, among only 12 education institutions to do so.

What is MSC?

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international nonprofit organization established to safeguard seafood supplies for the future. Recognized as the world’s leading certification program for sustainable, wild-caught seafood, the MSC works with leaders within the fishing industry and seafood sector to create a more sustainable seafood market.

The MSC ecolabel on a seafood product means it is sourced from a sustainable and well-managed fishery and is traceable from ocean to plate.

What does MSC evaluate?

Fisheries that receive the MSC Certification are held accountable for:
• Sustainable fish stocks
• Minimizing environmental impacts
• Effective fishery management

Where is MSC seafood served?

MSC certified seafood can be found in selected dishes at all three of the WSU dining centers: Hillside, Southside, and Northside. Look for the MSC ecolabel in your Dining Centers to see when MSC certified seafood is being served.
